Trafalgar: epic film?

Post by sharoma »

I was a bit miffed that the Battle of Trafalgar wasn't listed on Wikipedia's 'On this day' section on October 21st. This is a battle which definitely needs the epic film treatment! I doubt it will ever happen. Perhaps only an American studio (with access to Hollywood money) in collaboration with British actors, and possibly the BBC, could pull this off. Since the battle doesn't feature American heroes, they'd never finance it. Another reason it won't happen is the current fashionable anti-British trend which is sweeping TV and film. I love Our Flag Means Death but it shows the Royal Navy as a band of incompetent toffs. A film about Trafalgar, no matter how it was done, would be interpreted as British imperial propaganda. Still, Tom Hanks is working on a sequel to Greyhound! Perhaps he can use his influence to finance a film about the Battle of Jutland. Now that would be an epic film!

Waterloo also needs the modern treatment, although would CGI soldiers be as effective as the Soviet soldiers used in the original? Maybe if the upcoming Napoleon film is successful they'll do it.
