It’s very funny to me that with “Veganuary”, “No-nut November”, “Sober October” etc etc we are institutionalizing a secular Ramadan or Lent.
Doesn’t matter what you do or when you do it. It only matters that for one 30-day period of the year, you deliberately make yourself fucking miserable.
Secular lent is funny
Re: Secular lent is funny
If it's not for God, who is it for??
Oh yeah... It's purely an empty marketing stunt, a PR ploy. If you need to get clean, noone can tell you when the right time is with any chance of success. If you don't, do what the fuck you want.

Even when it's done for God, I don't see the value.
The dissonance between "You cannot have/do/eat xyz" and "Have these meat-filled dumplings that are specifically banned during this time. It's fine, our omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent God apparently lacks the power to see through pastry/dough" is but one of the many, many reasons this practice makes no sense.
Then to do the same thing but without God? Even more ridiculous. Nobody ever has a reason why they choose to deprive themselves for 30 days at a time, it's just done...just to do it, I guess? Nothing better to do? Leftover Christian guilt perhaps-can't say I relate to that though.
