A Couple of Takes on Historically Reconstructed Music!

Post by thatalex »

Arguably this could be in the history section, but I wanted to share a couple of links!

The first will be Synaulia, a talented group of reconstructors who specialise in Ancient Roman music and instrumentation. Check out this playlist on YouTube, I have no idea how authentic it is, but it sounds amazing!

Second is Beedle The Bardcore, a considerably less "serious" maker of music who specialises in Medieval instrumentation but plays the backing tracks of Golden Age and modern hip-hop in said instrumentation! Nice...

Excellent. I definitey got some Dead Can Dance vibes from the the Synaulia pieces. After while it sounded familiar. I'm sure that something very similiar to this was used in I, Claudius! Maybe it was during one of the funeral scenes or when Caligula was being melodramatic. HBO's Rome could definitely have benefited from more musical variety.

The Medieval 'It Was A Good Day' was barely recognisable but decent in its own way. For a medieval vibe Dead Can Dance's Saltarello is great.

I particularly liked the version of Regulate on the Bardcore channel, although it's a shame there's no vocals with it. Would be funny to hear a medieval equivalent of that.

That version of Regulate is certainly cool! The YT comments for Bardcore (which are normally very much to be avoided) can, with a reasonably eloquent fanbase, often be written in acceptably hilarious pastiches of Medieval English. Check the top one here:
