What is Robin watching lately?

Post by sharoma »

I will limit this post to new television programming:

Our Flag Means Death
It's very slow to start and often doesn't appear to be overtly funny. It is actually quite the clever comedy and has a refreshing warmth. I haven't seen such an interesting or original comedy in years (okay, maybe Plebs, which I love). Season 2 is currently broadcasting. Well recommended! A favourite joke of mine makes a subtle to reference to the struggle the bourgeoisie had in getting working people to accept wage slavery in lieu of access to the commons or ownership of their own produce.

The Winter King
Unfortunately I was not surprised that the makers messed this one up. The Warlord Chronicles are perhaps Bernard Cornwell's greatest books. A TV series with an unknown and unconvincing cast was bound to fail. I have watched four episodes and am left thinking that I wish they hadn't bothered. It feels rushed and half-hearted. In fact, it's so boring and unremarkable that I may stop watching it. I've read the books, I already know the story. Why waste time and risk sullying that?

Frasier (2023)
I've tried at least three times in my life to watch the original Frasier from start to finish and I always bailed by about season 6. It was excellent early on but soon lost its magic. A major reason I'm bothering with the reboot is because of Nicholas Lyndhurst. The idea of Rodders starring on US network television is a pleasing novelty but it also serves as a form of vindication for his supreme talent. It is also interesting how many of the US audience will have no idea who he is or why is he even there. To me he is a bigger legend than Kelsey Grammer!

South Park
A new special, South Park: Joining the Panderverse, is on later this month (October 27). I think South Park is the greatest cartoon of all time. It remains relevant, original, and most importantly, funny!

Rick & Morty
Another expected disappointment. This show hasn't been fresh for nearly a decade but for completionist sake I keep watching it. I no longer care as much as I did. It's well past its prime and should end.

People of Earth
I found this show thanks to Our Flag Means Death. It's great! A great shame that season 3 was cancelled.

The latest Rick & Morty - "That's Amorte" - was excellent! Best one in years. This season isn't proving as disappointing as expected. :D
